Ed sells 300k tickets... in a single day

- By Kevin Duggan

ED Sheeran yesterday rewrote the record books after selling over 300,000 tickets in one day – the most ever by an artist.

It means there are only a limited number of tickets left for the singer’s Irish tour next year.

All venues and dates listed for Ed’s Irish Tour 2018 have now sold out – other than a small number of places at Dublin’s Phoenix Park on May 16.

Organisers of the tour have paid tribute to Ed, who ‘created history’ with the record-breaking number of tickets that were sold.

Fans camped out overnight all over the country to snatch a ticket to see the English singer. Punters were glued to their screens at 11am, when the sale started online. Several of them tweeted their frustration about the Ticketmaster website melting down over the heavy traffic. Ticketmaster responded on Twitter urging fans not to give up and not to refresh the page as the site was very busy. Delighted fans posted photos with tickets outside of shops where they spent the beginning of their weekend. Ed will play two shows each in Cork, Galway, and Dublin and one show in Belfast in May 2018. The dates for Cork and Belfast, and the first Galway date, were sold out online by 3.30pm yesterday.

The singer played two shows in Croke Park last year, as well as two gigs in the 3Arena in April, which sold out in five minutes.

In an attempt to clamp down on touts, remaining tickets will be issued in the name of the person who purchases them. If a parent buys the tickets on their credit card for their child, the child will need to present a copy of the card as well as ID showing the family name.
