Carnage as car ploughs into crowd at anti-supremacist rally in Virginia

- By Ruaidhrí Giblin

ONE person was killed and several were seriously injured when a car ploughed into crowds marching against a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday afternoon.

Video posted on social media showed the car ploughing at speed into several slowmoving vehicles, which were surrounded by a densely packed crowd.

Blood could be seen on the bonnet and windscreen of one of the vehicles.

Several people sustained injuries ranging from minor to ‘life threatening’ throughout the day, according to police, who later confirmed that one person had died and 15 were injured.

The tragedy happened about two hours after violent clashes broke out between white nationalists who descended on the town to rally against plans to remove a statue of the Confederate general, Robert E. Lee, and others who arrived to protest the racism.

Hundreds of people chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles and unleashed chemical sprays.

At least eight were injured and one arrested in connection with the earlier violence.

It remains unclear if the driver of the car has been apprehended.

Speaking from his holiday base in Bedminister, New Jersey, President Trump did not specifically criticise the far-right white supremacists.

‘We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides,’ Mr Trump said.
