I’d have more faith in Del Boy than in a car-hire firm Jockeys don’t get what they deserve

-

Joe Duffy is so on the ball when he states that it’s time for the EU to bring car hire firms to book (MoS, August 6).

Over the years I have hired out cars in France and Italy and on every occasion I was fleeced unmercifully. The final straw for me was Pisa Airport. A very helpful car-hire assistant did everything possible to make the process less stressful.

She also assured me there were no hidden costs and that everything was paid for. My faith was renewed in the car-hire industry, but that did not last long.

On return I checked my account to find they had charged me over €300 in extras. I challenged them on it and got my money back. I have never hired a car since. The morals of those who run such companies would leave even Del Boy cringing.

Jim Jackman, Castleknock, Dublin 15. I fully concur with piece in The Title comment column of August 6 about jockeys leaving more handsomely paid sports stars in the halfpenny place when it comes to guts and courage. We certainly do not see riders writhing on the ground pretending to be injured after a fall.

The comparisons of the payments to Neymar and Barry Geraghty made interesting reading and it has to be said that the money gained (I refuse to use the word earned) by some of the top soccer players is immoral with so much poverty in the world.

However, the game of association football gets a lot more space in papers than horse racing and such is very much the case with The Title. So, in the light of the ‘courage incomparable’ piece, it would be appropriate if more articles and reports on the sport of kings appear in my favourite Sunday paper in future.
