LETTER OF THE WEEK

It’s a crisis, so where’s Leo?

-

VICKY PHELAN perfectly summed up Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach with her comment about how he was all over the news for Storm Emma but has been absent for the cervical cancer scandal (MoS, May 13).

Varadkar is first to the microphone and out in front of all the TV cameras when there is good publicity to be garnered. But any time things turn a little unpleasant, he vanishes and keeps his head down for as long as possible. It increasingly leaves the impression that he’s all about spin and polls, that he’d do anything to boost his ratings.

I doubt there is a single firm principle underneath all of that spin. His initially detached approach to the cancer scandal is all the more amazing given that he is a former minister for health. But in his mind, that was probably all the more reason to duck out of the limelight. Pathetic.
