LETTER OF THE WEEK
Facing up to a water crisis
NOW that we are experiencing a drought and severe water shortages, it would be nice if some of those who so vociferously opposed water charges would recognise their grave blunder.
Our water infrastructure is under huge strain and things are only going to get worse over the next few decades as we have a growing population and it’s widely predicted that long hot spells will become more commonplace.
We had a chance to do something about our water infrastructure while there was still time, without it costing individual taxpayers a huge amount. Nobody expects to get their electricity or gas for free, so why should water be any different?
Alas, nobody in politics will have the nerve to revisit this issue for a generation at least, and we’ll all suffer from that failure to act. Claire Nolan, Co. Galway.
