Outstanding Horgan deserves more credit

-

I HAVE been a long-time admirer of Patrick Horgan. I know TJ Reid has been on a different level in terms of his overall impact but in terms of purescoring ability, particularly over the last five years, Horgan (right) has been sensational for Cork.

Reid, Joe Canning, and Tony Kelly are three stars who, for the most part, take a lot of plaudits. Horgan deserves to be in the same company. I don’t think it has been recognised just how good he was in the Munster final against Clare.

Making Seamus Harnedy the captain has been huge for Cork – to catch the ball from the puck out after Clare went eight ahead showed serious leadership.

To me though, Horgan was still the best man on the field. And marking David McInerney, Clare’s best defender.

Some of the quality of the scores were out of this world. The sleight of hand, the touch, the ability to make space – it’s time he gets the acknowledgement he deserves. He is one of the best forwards that I have seen in all my time. Joe Deane and Ben O’Connor are regarded as two of Cork’s modern day great forwards. Again, Horgan is in that company. Go back to last year’s AllIreland semi-final against Waterford when he was outstanding, even playing against a sweeper.
