Sinn Féin uneasy at Mary Lou’s Presidential notion
IN a rare display of dissent Sinn Féin TDs have expressed profound unease with Mary Lou McDonald’s flirtation with a candidate for the Presidency.
TDs and Senators continue to be openly ‘surprised’ by the Sinn Féin leader’s announcement and were ‘seriously dubious about the tactics behind this’.
The mood was summarised by one high-profile TD who vowed if Sinn Féin ran an Áras candidate: ‘I will be canvassing very hard. I will be canvassing as far as my constituency goes and that’s it.’
Others were openly dismissive with one saying: ‘I simply cannot see a single plausible candidate.’
An advisor added: ‘Sinn Féin haven’t forgotten the Martin McGuinness experience. The party brought the special one down and the South ran him back up the North. They don’t want a reprise.’
