THREE THINGS WE LEARNT ABOUT SARRI

-

MAURIZIO SARRI is very animated while stalking the touchline and that was never more obvious than when he screamed at Alvaro Morata before half-time, demanding his striker closed down Huddersfield’s back three with more urgency. Sarri often turned to his backroom staff to sigh and gesticulate and did not feel Morata was giving him enough. He wants energy right from the front and it was interesting that the Spain international upped his levels after the break. SARRI has changed N’Golo Kante’s position slightly following the capture of Jorginho. The French World Cup winner started on the right of a three instead of anchoring and is being asked to motor through even more gears than last season. Kante is quite capable of that and relishes the opportunity to maraud from his station more often, as seen when converting Willian’s cross to open the scoring after 34 minutes. What Sarri will know is that Kante has the engine to act as a box-to-box midfielder. JORGINHO, Chelsea’s £57million signing from Napoli, has altered the way Chelsea operate as ‘Sarriball’ takes effect. They are methodical through midfield with a willingness to retain possession for longer than under Antonio Conte. It benefits Ross Barkley, as evidenced by one fabulous flick as Marcos Alonso was awarded a penalty. Only in the final third do they start moving at speed, placing emphasis on wide men Pedro and Willian, who again looked Chelsea’s most dangerous threat from the left.
