It’s Sunday, so red meat is healthy... Monday, alas

-

HOT on the heels of the news that low-carb diets promoted by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, pictured, could take years off our lives, there now comes the revelation that the key to longevity is eating more red meat and cheese.

Yes, that’s right, the very foodstuffs we were warned to eat just twice a week while bulking up on grains and superfoods the rest of the time are back on the menu.

A Canadian study of 220,000 adults found that eating three portions of dairy and one-and-a-half portions of meat a day could cut the risk of early death by a quarter.

The study flies in the face of conventional wisdom by suggesting that the saturated fats contained in meat and cheese appear to protect the heart. In addition, said the experts: ‘Those eating more fat were likely to be eating less carbohydrates, much of which was likely to be processed and sugary.’

But hold on a minute, wasn’t last week’s dietary news that carbs are actually good for us and we should be eating more, not less bread and pasta? Honestly, dietary advice is such a vicious circle, it would drive you to drink except that we can’t do that either since a new Lancet study revised the healthy alcohol limits down to zero.

There’s nothing for it but to wait and see what conflicting advice next week brings. It’s sure to be a treat.
