I do, I do, I do

WHAT would Father Ted say? Broadcaster Ruth Scott, who’s married to actor Dermot Morgan’s son Rob, has decided to try her hand as a wedding celebrant – after her own civil wedding went so well last year.

An avowed atheist, Ruth believes that just because you don’t have religion in your life, it doesn’t mean you can’t have faith in the perfect wedding.

‘I think maybe about 10 years ago... I was thinking ahead, saying, “What will happen when I die; I am an atheist, I don’t want a church funeral,’ she explained.

‘And when I get married, I don’t want a church ceremony.

‘Then I met Rob and we started thinking about weddings and in planning our wedding. I realised what a lovely experience it is.

‘We had a lovely man – he is actually a humanist and it was such a fun and nice experience.’

Ruth and Rob got together in 2012 after she had been single for 12 years and the pair wed in Bunratty Castle, Co. Clare, in 2017.

She refused to take his surname after building up a name for herself in the industry.

But the experience of the wedding inspired her. While she can’t legally marry people, she can conduct a ceremony and has already played a part in the wedding of two couples.

‘Ultimately, I would like to be a humanist as they can solemnise the wedding,’ she revealed.

‘My nephew was getting married last year so he asked me would I be their celebrant. ‘He said, “We will do the legal part in the registry office but on the day would you marry us?”’ Ruth says that much of the content of her ceremonies can be decided by the couple. ‘I like to suggest to people to include stories and poems,’ she added. As well as spreading the love, Ruth has her own weekend show on Radio Nova.

‘I’m an atheist. What will happen when I die?’

She moved over to the station after what was a shock exit from RTÉ last year following 20 years with the State broadcaster.

‘It was a huge shock,’ she said of leaving RTÉ. ‘I have kept in contact with a couple of people. And I’m a little bit surprised not to hear from some people.’

However, she said she was thrilled to be getting some work from TV3, now Virgin Media One.

‘Elaine Crowley has asked me to fill in [on her chat show] – she has a great show and team and panel so it’s great to be able to do that for her,’ she added.
