Christy: ‘I nearly threw myself off a tower block, but I lost my nerve’

- By Jim Gallagher

ASLAN singer Christy Dignam has revealed how close he was to jumping off one of the Ballymun towers in the capital at the height of his heroin addiction.

But the frontman tells Lucy Kennedy on her Virgin Media One show, Livin’ With Lucy, tomorrow night that he did not have the guts.

The Dublin grandad, 58, who is back on chemotherapy after first being diagnosed with cancer five years ago, said he was disgusted with himself for ruining the lives of wife Kathryn and daughter Kiera.

‘I remember being on Ballymun tower – Kathryn had thrown me out,’ he recalled.

‘We were on the sixth floor and I got a penny and threw it over and it took a second and a half to hit the ground.

‘I thought, if I jump off this, in a second and a half all this will be over. Kathryn will mourn me for a month and then she will get a husband she deserves, someone who will take care of her. I won’t cause Kiera any more pain. She will cry for a month but then at least she will be over me.

‘It was like I was killing them with a death of a thousand cuts. This is what I was thinking, but I did not have the balls to do it, thanks be to God. Things are good now.

‘Because of the drugs there were certain times I was not the father I should have been, so I try to make up for it now with the grandkids,’ he said.

Living with Lucy, airs tomorrow at 9pm on Virgin Media One
