And in the case of the scan she did read correctly why did it take so long to tell the patient?
THE Irish Mail on Sunday understands that a fifth patient, who subsequently died, had their cancer correctly identified by the controversial radiologist at the centre of the Kerry cancer scandal.
However, there was a delay in informing the
‘Many questions to be answered’
patient of their diagnosis which as yet is unexplained. The circumstances surrounding the treatment of this patient, whose details are not included in this week’s report, are being separately investigated by the South/South West Hospital group.
This fifth person means there is a total of 12 patients who have had delayed diagnoses in this scandal – 11 related to missed diagnoses, and one due to a failure to communicate to the patient promptly.
A spokesperson for the hospital group confirmed there were ‘no radiological discrepancies in this case’. ‘We can confirm that we have engaged with a family regarding concerns raised.
‘The hospital has clarified the concerns of the family. The hospital will investigate and address the concerns raised and will continue to engage with and respond to the family.’
Sinn Féin Cllr Toiréasa Ferris, who first raised the question of the fifth person, said it was important to clarify what happened as soon as possible to give people confidence in the health service.
‘This is a huge national scandal that has happened here and there are many questions to be answered,’ she said.
