Weighing on your mind, Leo? No, I’ve more to worry about

- By Craig Hughes

THE Taoiseach last night laughed off suggestions that his office tried to have his embarrassing televised weigh-in pulled.

On Wednesday, Mr Varadkar, who recently turned 40, was left red-faced on RTÉ hit show Operation Transformation after finding out that he has a metabolic age of 53.

Metabolic age is based on the amount of kilocalories we burn a day before activity, compared with other people in the same age group. Muscle burns more than fat, so the fitter and healthier you are, the better and lower your metabolic age. A higher metabolic age may mean you have unnecessary fat.

A fitness enthusiast, Mr Varadkar – who recently revealed he was cutting down on his consumption of red meat – was left with food for thought after receiving the news.

When asked by the MoS if he or anyone from his team had asked for the segment to be pulled Mr Varadkar said it was ‘news to me’. He went on to say: ‘I don’t think it did me any harm, [I have] more important things to worry about this week anyway.’

Viewers would have seen that the Taoiseach seeming a bit jittery when he hopped on the special scales that works by sending an electric pulse through the body.

Having been told the result, Mr Varadkar, right, said: ‘Fiftythree? Surprised to hear that, kind of wondering about the science behind it but I’ll have to see the breakdown.’
