World Cup winner was truly great

JOOST VAN DER WESTHUIZEN was a former scrum half and captain of South Africa. He played in three World Cups, including the Springboks’ triumphant campaign in 1995, and scored 190 points for his country.

When Van der Westhuizen retired from internatio­nal rugby in November 2003 he held the record for most Test caps (89) and most tries scored (38).

Van Der Westhuizen was diagnosed with MND in 2011 and told he had between two and five years to live. He died in February 2017, aged 45.
