Student in f iring line for hurtful WhatsApp law group
A FEMALE trainee solicitor has demanded that the law student at the centre of the ‘T*ts and Filth’ WhatsApp scandal be reprimanded by the Law Society for creating the controversial social messaging group.
The student, who attends the Law Society’s college at Blackhall Place, Dublin, told Newstalk Radio that she, ‘would like the Law Society to set a hard stance. If they single these acts out as unacceptable, that will set the tone for future students and future people in this profession, so I think that needs to be done’.
She added: ‘Knowing that your future colleagues are people that are going to be misogynistic or sexist is very worrisome.’
The prestigious society runs the country’s sole training college for solicitors and last week it issued a warning to students that they could end their aspiring legal careers by posting inappropriate comments.
Students were given the warning in an email after the college authorities became aware that an offensive social media messaging group had been set up by male students to rate their female colleagues.
A probe is underway into the scandal and an international law firm has confirmed that one of its employees is at the centre of the embarrassing probe.
Last night, legal sources confirmed the setting up of the group could be enough to finish the young man’s career.
One source said: ‘Most firms now have a clause in their employment contract which states any behaviour which affects the reputation of the firm is grounds for dismissal.’
