THE Irish Mail on Sunday and its journalists have received nine nominations for this year’s NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards, which will be held on November 14. These nominations are among 20 received for DMG Media Ireland, our parent company, which also includes the Irish Daily Mail and the website Extra.ie.
Michael O’Farrell, investigations editor with the Mail on Sunday, has been nominated for four awards: Business Story of the Year, Business Journalist of the Year, News Reporter of the Year and Political Story of the Year. His nominated work includes his exclusive on the secret past of then presidential candidate Gavin Duffy and Stephen Roche’s €600,000 debts.
Anne Sheridan has been nominated for Investigative Journalism and Campaigning Journalism for her long-running investigation into alleged child sexual abuse by Bishop Eamonn Casey and payments made to two women.
Political Editor John Lee has been nominated for Political Journalist of the Year for his work on Joanne Hayes and the Kerry Babies scandal and coverage of Donald Trump’s visit earlier in the year.
Craig Hughes has been nominated for Showbiz Story of the Year for revealing that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar wrote to Kylie Minogue, requesting a personal introduction on official Government headed paper, which his department twice refused to release under the Freedom of Information Act.
Norma Costello has been nominated for Crime Story of the Year for tracking down Lisa Smith in Syria and being the first reporter to speak to her in person and in depth on her alleged links to Isis.
Our writer Shane McGrath is also among those nominated for Sports Journalist of the Year for a series of pieces including a historic look-back at the war-time efforts of the GAA and features on upcoming rower Monika Dukarska and cyclist Orla Walsh.
Our sister paper, The Irish Daily Mail, received 10 nominations, in the categories of features, columnists, scoop of the year and also in campaigning journalism.
Extra.ie became the first stand-alone news website to be nominated in the Website of the Year category.
