‘It’s important to keep morale up’

Dr Altona Myers is one of Ireland’s leading cosmetic clinicians and in her south Dublin clinic she sees the faces of women and men with revolutionary treatments for all ages.

Altona graduated with an honours degree in dentistry from Trinity College in 2005. Having started her dental career in the Seapoint Clinic in Blackrock she was constantly upskilling and keeping up to date with new advances. Her training led her to Harley Street where she was inspired by the advances in cosmetic dentistry and cosmetic procedures. Her interest in cosmetic work and enhancing the lives, smiles and faces of her patients through the best products and most recent technologies was piqued.

With the cosmetic surgery business in Ireland experiencing a boom – and both women and men spending thousands to enhance their looks – she opened her Stillorgan clinic.

Altona says that scientific advances are paving the way for people of all ages to achieve some amazing looks with minor treatments.

‘Years ago people wanted a lot done to their face but now they want a more natural look and they want to rejuvenate their face.

‘It’s about managing people’s expectations and knowing what they should look like. So I can say to them “I want to keep you natural and today I will do this, we can work on the face over time together” and it’s subtle changes over time.’

While cosmetic surgery has had a dramatic increase in popularity among all ages, Dr Myers advises caution and says only start when you need it.

‘It’s really good to be preventative but you have to be really careful of age range. When you are in your 20s you should be looking after your skin and doing things with diet.

‘But a lot of people will start anti-wrinkle injections in their mid to late 20s and some people do need it, it just depends on their lines and if they are really strong.

‘Later on in the 30s and from there on forward people are doing more with their faces. Its popularity is really growing because there is so much that can be done for so little down time. Years ago it was Botox, filler or surgery, there was no in between.

‘But now it has progressed so much and there is so much more that can be done and products that can be used.’

Eurovision star Linda Martin – a regular on the stage and musical circuit – has had a combination of Profhilo and Botox treatment with Dr Myers.

Linda admits that having a jab helps her not just look good, but also gives her a big morale boost.

‘It is so important for women to keep their morale up and look their best, especially as we get older.

‘I’ve had the Profhilo and anti-wrinkle injections which are non-surgical procedures and they bolster what we already have.

‘My skin was glowing after [the] treatment,’ she told Magazine.
