Audacious ensembles are the order of the season as plaid and checks clash for a statement look. Keep it more Parisian mademoiselle than country hunter with heritage patterns and after-hours tartan for a sophisticated style
Check mate. We can’t get enough of plaids and checks this season in combinations we would have laughed at a few years ago.
Ok they’re still a bit funny now but we’re more willing to accept these audacious ensembles. Just look at Cardi B (bottom left) front row at Chanel.
She’s not holding back, check hat and all just in case we’d miss her. What about Laura Dern’s trousers? As spotted in London recently. There are no words. And yet she’s wearing them at the right time, she’s in with the in crowd.
Our favourite, as we face into the festive season, is tartan. How gorgeous does actress and director Sarah Sophie Flicker look at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in New York? Punk meets style with loads of attitude thrown in to ensure she looks like an individual, not another Kardashian clone.
For Spring Summer 2020 fashion houses Dior and Burberry have given their blessing for our check and plaid love affair to continue for the seasons ahead.
If you’re going more for the Céline look, as in rich Parisian intellectual, the best advice comes from Elle magazine: ‘AW19’s update on bourgeoise dressing is town, not country; Parisian mademoiselle, not lady of the manor, with heritage checks and after-hours tartan providing the through-line.’
This clearly is a busy look. There’s loads going on here whether you want go maximalist and add stripes like style maven Olivia Palermo or play it down with a soft grey sweater like Mandy Bork in the front row at Boss Spring Summer 2020.
On the high street, there’s no shortage of options including that wonderful asymmetrical skirt from Massimo Dutti, as spotted on Queen Letizia on duty in Madrid.
Penneys are offering check trousers for €12. Try on before you buy.
Our favourite street style look comes from Milan Fashion Week (top left), that luxury oversized, brightly coloured plaid shirt and cords.
Cosy and chic.
Let the fun continue.
