Caroline’s agony and ecstasy...

- By Claire Scott claire.scott@mailonsunday.ie

MEN need to open up and talk more about miscarriage, says Caroline Morahan.

The former Off The Rails host said she encouraged her husband to go and talk to a friend after the couple suffered their second miscarriage because it was ‘a grief that needed to be processed’.

Ms Morahan, 42, who is married to tech executive Dáithí Ó Caoimh, gave birth to their son Rowan earlier this year and has said the couple were blown away to discover they had conceived naturally after two failed IVF attempts.

Caroline admitted she and Dáithí were ‘over the moon’ when they discovered they were pregnant. The proud mum was being scanned for her third round of IVF when the doctor noticed a brown dot on the screen.

Caroline recalls her saying: ‘That’s not a follicle, that’s an embryo, you’re pregnant, you have conceived naturally. It was just unbelievable.’

Surprisingly, Caroline’s mother knew before the doctors that she was pregnant on Christmas Day last year.

‘Mam had sort of seen something in my eyes and my skin and remarked there was something going on,’ Caroline said.

‘On Christmas Day, she said, “you are glowing”. She was right!’ Baby Rowan is now four months old.

The LA-based broadcaster told Brendan O’Connor on RTÉ Radio yesterday, that while the first miscarriage didn’t throw her into ‘the depths of despair’ her second one ‘hit very hard’.

‘After the second miscarriage I dispatched [Dáithí] to a friend, and I said go and talk to him, you can’t be the big strong man... it’s a grief and needs to be processed, I don’t think men are good at that.’
