DRAMA The Knick (Both seasons) ★★★★ Steven Soderbergh directs a precisely styled US drama, with Clive Owen as a pioneering, drug-addicted surgeon in NYC in 1900. His grisly operations are part of why this is often best watched through fingers.

COMEDY Corporate (Seasons 1-2) ★★★ Dark skewering of US office life, set at a corporation where everyone lives in fear of sword-wielding CEO Christian DeVille (The Wire’s Lance Reddick).

NEW! Crashing (All six parts) ★★★ Six months before Fleabag came out, Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and starred in this Ch4 comedy about twentysomethings living as property guardians in a large, disused hospital.

From Monday. NETFLIX

DRAMA Spinning Out (Season 1) ★★★★ This US drama about ice skating sisters divided by their driven, bipolar mum (Mad Men’s January Jones) has something authentic and addictive at its core. The skating sequences are stunning, too, but ignore the sudden soap-like plot lurches in the opening episode. They’re not the norm.

NEW! Sex Education (Season 2) ★★★ Netflix’s colourful drama set in an oddly American-looking British school returns, with student and amateur sex therapist Otis (Asa Butterfield) graduating from theory to practice. What follows is like the first series, but amplified, and with a bigger role for his professional mother (Gillian Anderson, above). From Friday.

MOVIE Minions (2015) U ■ ★★★ Fun, origin story spin-off for the yellow critters from Despicable Me. From Thursday.
