Rise and shine for a dream bedroom

Use the extra time spent at home to tackle some spring decluttering... and there’s no better place to start than in your bedroom

- Emily Westbrooks

We have all been spending more time in our homes in the past few weeks, and at this point you might be ready to tackle more than your Netflix queue. I subscribe to the theory that doing something – anything – can give you a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small the task.

While I haven’t been ready to start writing the next great novel, and I’ve barely made a start on my two-year-old son’s baby book, I’ve been chipping away at some of the clutter that has built up around our home over the last few years. And, dare I say, it’s very satisfying.

If you’re searching for a bit of purpose these longer evenings, here are three small organising tasks that will help you transform your bedroom for the better.

TACKLE THE PLACE WHERE CLOTHES PILE UP

There’s a chair in our master bedroom that has barely ever seen the light of day, always covered in a pile of clothes. Some need ironing, some need special laundering, some just need to be put away for the next season. Tackling that pile not only gave me a comfortable place to sit, it gave me the momentum to take on some of the other bedroom organisation I’ve been avoiding.

GIVE JEWELLERY A PROPER PLACE

I have had jewellery hidden away from my magpie toddlers in more places than I could ever remember. I took the time to dig out all of my earrings and necklaces, detangle them and put them safely away. One day, I’ll invest in the cutest jewellery boxes for the top of my dresser, which instantly elevates jewellery storage.

TIDY UP THE BEDSIDE TABLE

My bedside table had become a repository for books I’ve started but haven’t yet finished. That’s not a very peaceful way to head off to bed. A bedside table should be set up beautifully, with organised storage underneath, a reasonable number of books you actually intend to finish and a few pretty bits, like a vase with a few flowers. Add a candle and you’ve hit luxury level.
