It’s the picture perfect phone
The continuous improvement of smart phone cameras has helped us all look like better photographers. The new P40 Pro from Huawei is one such phone with a sophisticated camera set-up, but it also comes with serious tech under the hood and 5G capability.
Unboxing the P40 Pro reveals a beautifully designed phone. The 6.6in screen is striking and almost completely bezel-free allowing for a truly immersive view. The OLED screen will display 16.7 million colours, has a 90 Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2640 x 1200 pixels.
Measuring less than 9mm thick and weighing in at just 209g, the balance of this phone in the hand is perfect. The screen curves on all four sides making it easy to hold, and its stylish matte glass back shimmers.
At its heart is Huawei’s Kirin 950 5G chip. This is a powerful octa-core chip and ensures performance is blistering. It also helps the face and onscreen fingerprint unlock to work seamlessly and almost instantly.
The initial allure of the P40 for many though, will be the camera set-up. It’s a quad-camera system codesigned with photography masters Leica. It includes a 50MP wide-angle camera, a 40MP cine camera, a telephoto camera and a 3D sensing camera.
The results are exemplary. Video as well, is excellent with support for 4K recording and pixel-perfect slow-motion. No wonder the global benchmark DxOMark just awarded the P40 Pro its highest score ever for a smartphone camera.
Huawei do have one challenge though and that’s the absence of the
Google Play store, for now.
They’ve launched their own App Gallery and while everything may not be there yet, big name apps from Microsoft as well as the likes of the RTÉ Player
and SnapChat are. I
SNAP HAPPY:
