Lockdown is woof on our dogs too!

- By Niamh Walsh

WITH dog groomers across the country closed since the lockdown began, dogs and cats are experiencing bad hair days.

And such is the demand for homegrooming kits that most retailers have soldout and there are long waiting lists for dog clippers to cut your pooch in quarantine.

From matted coats, unruly tails, and tatty ears to fur and hair shedding, pooches around the country are also feeling the illeffects of lockdown.

The warm weather further adds to dogs’ discomfort as they become overheated and struggle with the weight of their furry coats. Canines also have a higher body temperature than humans so the sunshine, while welcome for walkies, can be the cause of severe sweating for ungroomed pets.

The Irish Mail on Sunday contacted a number of major retailers up and down the country with the majority reporting demand for grooming clippers has far exceeded supply and they had a long waiting list from owners.

A spokesperson for leading pet retailer MaxiZoo told the MoS: ‘We currently have a limited supply of clippers. We have noticed a huge increase in demand over the past number of weeks.

‘We are being advised by our suppliers that they will be able to provide us with stock over the coming weeks. We still have a full range of brushes, furminators and slicker brushes as part of the further grooming range of items in our stores.’

But prospective amateur groomers are advised to consult their pet store, regular groomer or even watch some online tutorials before trimming their pet’s hair to avoid injury or, worse, their fur baby ending up looking less pampered and more mutt-ugly.
