The Irish Mail on Sunday

Crossword c hallenge i s a h aven f or r esidents

- Deirdre Mullins and the residents of Haven Bay Care Centre, Kinsale, Co. Cork.

IT WAS with great excitement that we learned we had won the Irish Mail on Sunday Crossword competition.

My name is Deirdre Mullins and I am the activities coordinator at Haven Bay Care Centre located in Kinsale, Co. Cork.

The residents and I religiously attempt the crossword every Monday morning – some days we fly through it, other days it is a slow trudge.

Whatever the outcome it is one of our favourite activities and not only does it provide a highly enjoyable activity, it acts as a catalyst for other activities. I usually base a quiz around the answers or if there is a particular theme connected with it, I base a reminiscence session on it. Just recently the theme of cheese inspired a cheese tasting afternoon. I have attached a photo of one of my residents with the delicious display, which was even tastier to eat.

It was a few days later, I picked up a voicemail on my mobile, left by a gentleman regarding winning the crossword and how to collect our winnings.

I am also attaching a few photos of our residents celebrating our win which we put up on our Facebook page and it also featured in our regional newspaper, The Southern Star.

We will continue to strive to complete the weekly crossword and you never know we may win again... we actually won about five years ago!

One thing I suppose it proves, is that cocooning can be very productive!

Kind regards and we wish all the staff of the Irish Mail on Sunday to keep healthy, safe and well.
