Big kick-off... with a few new tweaks!
The game we love is back. The game we know, not so much. From masks to socially-distanced celebrations, this is how Resumption Day unfolded...
1pm Schalke players, all in face masks, file on to their team bus — observing social distancing as they leave their hotel.
1.50 Dortmund players walk the pitch all sporting their club-branded face masks. 2pm
Ballboys are spotted disinfecting match balls. 2.20 You’ll Never Walk Alone plays at a near-empty ground with some piped-in crowd noise.
2.25 Players leave the tunnel. There is no mascot or handshakes, while the subs are seated two metres apart — with masks — on an extended bench.
2.30 Kick-off and both bosses are in their technical area minus the face masks they had been initially told to wear. Managers have special dispensation not to wear them.
2.59 Erling Haaland scores the opening goal of the resumption to put Dortmund 1-0 up. And in keeping with protocols, there isn’t a hug or a kiss in sight.
3.18 They may have arrived on the pitch separately but it’s business as usual at half-time, with Dortmund and Schalke players heading for the tunnel en masse.
3.19 Ballboys begin another round of ball disinfecting.
4.07 A tap of hands as Jadon Sancho replaces Hazard.
4.18 Schalke make a piece of history by making a fifth substitution. The DFL have brought in a five-sub rule due to post-lockdown fitness concerns.
4.20 Dortmund’s victorious players do their trademark celebration — in front of banks of empty seats.
4.23 But some things never change as Freiburg have a late goal disallowed against Leipzig on a VAR call. Robin Koch (right) is just offside and the game ends 1-1.
5.28 Music blares out over the PA to welcome Frankfurt and Gladbach at the Commerzbank Arena for the late game.
