FLESH AND BONE

No-holds-barred portrait of ballet life

If you’re in the mood for something as light and airy as a sugar plum fairy, well, this gritty eight-part dance drama from 2015 definitely isn’t for you. This is more about the brutality and dysfunction of the ballet world than about the glamour. Gifted young dancer Claire (Sarah Hay) joins a prestigious New York City ballet company and finds out that it’s not all pirouettes and curtain calls. She has to deal with a druggy prima ballerina, jealous rivals in the corps and a volatile, capricious tyrant of an artistic director. Flesh And Bone was made by a production team with close links to ballet. All of the dancing cast were professional dancers and it really shows. Irina Dvorovenko (left) also stars. Available now

During its four-season run to date, the comedy drama has received numerous nominations at the Emmys, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, yet it remains largely unknown in the UK, despite the first run having appeared on Channel 4. If you want to know what you’ve been missing, every episode is now available to stream. It charts the lives of Jack and

Rebecca Pearson, their biological children Kate and Kevin, and their adopted African-American son Randall, both in the present day and in flashback. Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown star. Available now
