A costly but effective way to blow hot and cold

Dyson Pure Hot+Cool From €599, dyson.ie ★★★★★

SETTING up a home office in the summer means thinking about ventilation and cooling. However, it won’t be long until I need to think about heating the same workspace. Dyson’s Pure Hot+Cool is a smart-home gadget that’s designed to deal with this three-pronged challenge of heating, cooling and air purification.

Standing at 764mm tall, the Hot+Cool will be noticed in a room but its super-stylish design with white and silver body help it look more like a modernist piece of hitech furniture. That said, it is still small enough to place on a dressing table or desk.

In the box with the Hot+Cool, comes a remote control that cleverly attaches magnetically to the body of the heater. There aren’t many controls on the body so the remote or the Dyson app are the preferred methods of control. There is a small digital display on the Hot+Cool that shows air quality and operational info.

Once I’d inserted the filter, and downloaded the Dyson Link app, I was ready to go. I selected the desired temperature and the fan started in heat mode and automatically switches off when the temperature is achieved. For the fan mode, it’s as simple as tapping a button on the remote. There’s a useful automatic mode which is probably the best setting for everyday use. This monitors pollutants and changes the fan speed automatically to purify the air.

After a couple of days of use, I got into the habit of setting automatic mode and letting the fan oscillate to cover the whole room.

The price may seem eye-watering but there is remarkable engineering built into this Dyson. The HEPA filters that extract the allergens and pollutants from the air do a great job. The room doesn’t feel dry but, overnight, pet and kitchen smells just seemed to melt away.

The Pure Hot+Cool may not be an impulse purchase, but it makes an impact from the moment you switch it on.

BIG FAN: Dyson’s Pure Hot+Cool is a breath of fresh air
