BRRRR! SNOW AND SLEET IS ORDER OF DAY IN BIG FREEZE
A STATUS yellow weather warning is in place around the country until midday today as temperatures plunged overnight to minus 4C.
Snow is expected to fall in many parts of Ireland this weekend as the temperature falls to well below freezing, leading to hazardous conditions.
Last night, gardaí said Clifden town in Co. Galway, was impassable and urged all road users to take care.
Temperatures will stay around freezing for the rest of the weekend as a lowpressure area crosses the country overnight – with snow expected to build up in many areas.
‘Overnight, a band of wintry showers will extend north-eastwards across the country giving falls of sleet and snow in many areas with some accumulations. Cold and icy with a widespread sharp frost with minimum temperatures of -4C to zero degrees with light breezes freshening in some areas by morning,’ a met.ie forecast said.
Sunday will start very cold with snow lying in many areas leading to hazardous conditions on roads and pathways.
‘There’ll be further hail and snow showers, especially across eastern counties with further accumulations expected,’ it added.
Temperatures will drop to minus 3C on Sunday night with widespread frost and icy patches forming. Wintry showers of sleet or snow with clear spells are expected.
Monday will bring showery outbreaks of rain or sleet during the day mixed with dry and bright intervals. Temperatures will range from 4C and 7C with a westerly breeze.
The cold, wintry spell will end on Tuesday, with a change to much milder and wetter conditions spreading northwards in the afternoon.
