Squad will be blend of youth and experience

STEPHEN KENNY does things his own way when it comes to finalising his Republic of Ireland squad. He not only waits for longer to show his hand but also opts for quality over quantity.

On Thursday, three days before the squad gathers in Manchester prior to the flight to Belgrade, Kenny will confirm the 23 players on duty.

The low number mirrors those who strip on match day and makes everyone feel involved.

With a full round of Championship games to come. Kenny can’t confirm his travelling party until Thursday morning’s checks calls. But he has a handle on who he’ll lean on for the World Cup qualifier against Serbia and Luxembourg, and the friendly with Qatar in Debrecen.

One problem area is goalkeeper, as Darren Randolph and Caoimhín Kelleher are injured, which will lead to a first call-up for 19-year-old Gavin Bazunu of Rochdale. While Kieren Westwood, 36, could be recalled after a four-year absence.

Ciaran Clark and Josh Cullen are on track for promotion, as replacements for John Egan and James McCarthy.

‘Ciaran Clark has had a run of games at Newcastle and has done terrifically well. I’ve seen him three times in the last few weeks,’ said Kenny. ‘I was at West Brom versus Newcastle, at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea-Newcastle. I saw him at Newcastle as well.

‘The fact that he is left-sided gives you great options there.’

Cullen’s game has flourished at Anderlecht under Vincent Kompany.

‘The move has seen Josh take his game up a level. He’s more progressive in his passing, he’s got great dynamism in midfield.

‘He’s embraced the opportunity to go there, determination to do well. He gives us a good option. Without doubt he’s in the squad next week.’

Kenny’s chief scout, Ruaidhri Higgins will be at Wembley today to see Sunderland and Tranmere in the Football League Trophy final, sparking speculation of a possible recall for Aiden McGeady at 34.

‘Aiden McGeady and Aiden O’Brien are playing for Sunderland, and Lee O’Connor for Tranmere. We have to cast our net wide and examine all options,’ said Kenny. Another 34-year-old, Shane Long, seems set to return.
