Interiors: Go green for a fresh start

Olive, sage and spring greens are trending this season and inspire a fresh and calming effect in a room

- Emily Westbrooks

While we might not be having quite the St Patrick’s Day we all hoped for this year yet again, we’ll always have interiors, right? For what will hopefully be our last lockdown Paddy’s Day for our lifetimes, we’ll take inspiration from the green shoots popping up both metaphorically and literally all around us.

Those green shoots are the perfect colour to inspire this season’s interiors, from moss green sofas to sage-coloured accent walls. Spring green offers a sliver of hope as we come out of winter. It’s also a resolute colour, one with a bit of gravitas that will anchor a room and bring calm amongst the other design choices you make.

Olive has been trending in the last year or so, bringing back a colour that was relegated while all things pink had their moment. This particular shade of green leans a little darker and mossier than typical olive, but similarly stays far from the typical St Patrick’s Day kelly green. It can pair well with a number of other colours, including, but certainly not limited to, pink, teal or neutrals.

It works particularly well when it’s the star of the show: let the rest of the interior design decisions remain neutral, like white, light wood tones or even industrial matte black. With white window treatments or slightly off-white walls, this spring green can be soothing and relaxing — not unlike a holiday to the countryside in the hopefully not so far-off future.

Mossy spring green can also work well with other shades of green, from kicky green apple to regal teal. Layering in shades of green can be a very easy way to make this colour work in your home. Pop in a few potted plants, or opt for a half-wall feature in the bedroom that brings depth and freshness to the space.
