COSY UP TO THE SEASON
Add some pumpkins, leaves and wreaths to your home for a warm welcome
If you don’t believe that autumn is the absolute cosiest season, you might want to skip past my column today, because the next few paragraphs are going to be full of sheer autumn appreciation.
I’ll admit, Christmas does give autumn a run for its money, but there’s something a bit slower that gives autumn top marks for cosiness in my book.
Autumn isn’t as dark as the full (long) winter season, but it still invites you to pull out candles for maximum ambience.
The trees turn beautiful colours before losing their leaves, inspiring decorating with all the best colours, from burnt orange to bright sunflower yellow.
And let’s face it, pumpkins are decidedly enjoyable as far as root vegetables are concerned. Autumn also marks the beginning of wreath season, and there’s nothing more cheerful than walking up to your front door and getting a greeting in the form of pumpkins, bats or leaves.
I’ve been known to pick up branches and flowers past their prime on walks in the countryside to create seasonal arrangements or to decorate a mantel. In fact, just about every year, I come home with a weird sculptural branch to set in an oversized vase for the remaining autumn months.
I haven’t ever experimented with painting pumpkins in dazzling cheerful colours, but this may well be the year that I give that a shot.
There’s simply something about autumn setting in that inspires creativity and encourages us to slow down enough to make something with our hands.
If you haven’t considered autumn to be quite that perfect invitation for slower, more intentional interior decorating, let this be your sign to pick up a weird branch, paint pumpkins, and enjoy crunching through the fallen leaves of this season as much as possible.
