SMOKES & DAGGERS

A mischievous mix of political asides with JOHN DRENNAN

-

RTÉ DIRECTOR general Kevin Bakhurst and deputy DG Adrian Lynch were quite the star guests at Dublin’s RHA Gallery, where RTÉ was launching an art competition for children. One bystander noted of the couple, who worked the room like celebrities, that they bore a definite resemblance in physical stature to Laurel and Hardy – although without the laughs, Smokes presumes.

ONE of the senators who was bussed in to fill the empty tables at the Annual Fine Gael Dublin Bay South Business Breakfast this week – starring Paschal Donohoe – had quite the surprise when they told their table of barristers that they supported the ‘silks on strike’. The reply: ‘Oh, they’re not our sort of barristers. They practise criminal law. They deserve everything they don’t get’.

AS three Greens (Róisín Garvey, Pauline O’Reilly and Whatsapp hero Brian Leddin) stared glumly at a bike with two flat tyres on the Dáil plinth, Smokes realised he had moved closer to the answer to the ageless question as to how many Greens does it take to sort out a flat tyre. More than three! Another passer-by chuckled: ‘Same as the Greens – full of hapless bystanders, two flat tyres and going nowhere’. Ouch.

SPECULATION is further intensifying about the great Kenny comeback, with Enda looking for a Presidential berth in the Phoenix Park. One source noted: ‘He’s tidied himself up a lot recently. The long hair and the beard are gone. He must have been told you can’t get elected to the Park wandering around like the Big Lebowski.’

COMMENTING on RTÉ’s property options, one politician described for us last week an incident that took place prior to the Ryan Tubridy ‘accident’. An RTÉ star, upon hearing that a TD was on their way out to TV3, smirked: ‘Ah yes, Tallaght TV.’
