Waltzing Angela ‘ the full package’

ANGELA SCANLON’s Saturday night Strictly waltz was a slightly subdued performance compared with last week’s dazzling dance – but the Co. Meath presenter’s moves continued to impress the show’s judges, who told her: ‘You’ve got the full package.’

The Ask Me Anything host took to the floor with professional partner Carlos Gu with an eloquent, demure Viennese waltz. While their twirl around the floor was indeed stunning, and garnered them a respectable 28 points, the four judges were noticeably less effusive this week than last week, even scoring the performance seven points each.

In his post-performance analysis, head judge Anton Du Beke told Angela and her pro partner Carlos: ‘Emotionally, I thought it was beautiful. It was sort of full. I would like to see it breathier, sweep more. The position actually was quite nice, but it got a little tense because down below it got a little clipped and it was clipped because it was too small... ‘Sweep across the floor and I think you’ve got the full package.’ Celebrated ballroom dancer Shirley Ballas also praised Angela’s poise, but criticised some elements of her footwork.

She said: ‘Well, you’re talented, we know that. You are a beautiful elegant lady for sure,’ she said.

‘You didn’t lower one heel in what was the whole of the dance, you stayed on a balletic ball through the whole dance you can’t do that. You have to understand the footwork,’ she said.

But she reassured Angela, stressing: ‘Don’t let what I’m saying put you off. I’m just giving you some guidance when you get to the ballroom dances. You can’t just do everything.

‘You need to know which heels are lowering which toe and so on. Well done.’

Judge Craig Revel Horwood said the performance was a tad

too frantic for his tastes. ‘A little bit frenetic for me and spiky, so it could be smoothed out, and that’s just the result of the technique not being right.

‘You are a gorgeous dancer and so watchable and you make a great partnership,’ he added.

Motsi added: ‘You are capable. I just think you need to economise which energy do I need when.’
