HOW THEY RATED

Marks out of 10

- By Rob O’Halloran

GAVIN BAZUNU 8

Static when beaten although better onwards with multiple fine reaction saves. Quick off line but still troubled by long shots.

MATT DOHERTY 6

Captain on the night but inconsistent. Kickstarted Browne’s chance but wasteful in possession bar one fine run up right flank.

DARA O’SHEA 5

On right side of the back three. Should have challenged Weghorst for his goal, and almost caused another with inaccurate passing.

NATHAN COLLINS 5

Easily turned by Weghorst for the opener. Same mistake with Simons but unpunished. Poor passing invited danger, targeted in air.

LIAM SCALES 7

A rare source of positivity. Started with timely interception and denied both Simons and Gakpo. Showed intent with positive long passes.

RYAN MANNING 6

Busy in the first-half, drawing fouls. Lovely nutmeg on Weghorst but clattered Collins in lead-up to his goal and delivery mediocre.

ALAN BROWNE 5

Had a good early chance but struck it straight to the goalkeeper. Dispossessed with back to goal on multiple occasions.

JASON KNIGHT 5

Caught napping in possession by De Vrij and gave away a dangerous free kick. Pass to Simons somehow did not lead to a goal.

CALLUM ROBINSON 6

Played as second striker and made a lively start, teeing up Browne for his chance. Faded before being whipped at half-time for Idah.

SUBSTITUTES 6

Adam Idah introduced at half-time and had a goal disallowed for offside. Jamie McGrath introduced to bolster midfield presence, making a key tackle on Gakpo. Mikey Johnston and Jayson Molumby brought energy but measly minutes for Parrot. Irish attack improved, but not enough.

JOSH CULLEN 6

Sat at the base of midfield and pressed high early but, one important defensive header aside, had little presence.

EVAN FERGUSON 6

Isolated from start, forcing him to drop uncharacteristically deep. Lack of service an issue, before being removed after interval.

STEPHEN KENNY 5

Positive early pressing faded with energy levels. Tactical change to two target men at interval caused issues and he had to bring McGrath on for Ferguson to amend them. Ireland created next to nothing, making for what could be a drab end to the Kenny era.
