Roscommon boss fuming after disallowed ‘goal’

- By Philip Lanigan

ROSCOMMON manager Davy Burke stopped short of calling for VAR to be introduced to Gaelic football after the latest big call at Croke Park went against his side.

The All-Ireland senior club hurling final saw calls for video technology after an O’Loughlin Gaels goal wasn’t awarded despite replays showing that the ball looked to have crossed the line. And this time, Roscommon cried foul over a first half goal by Daire Cregg that was disallowed on the basis of being handpassed over the line – despite replays showing it touched a Dublin defender before hitting the net. Referee Seán Hurson made the call after talking to his umpires and Burke said: ‘I wouldn’t like too many VAR or Hawk-Eye decisions in a game… I wouldn’t like to see the game slowed down any further.

‘But we do need to find a way to get the decisions right. It looks like a blatant goal to me. It hit the Dublin man’s hand, into the back of the net.

‘The two umpires are right there. We’re in Division 1. We had a good goal against Tyrone given against us. Two umpires again made the decision.

‘It’s tough going. We’re not getting the breaks whatsoever.’

Meanwhile, an emotional Dessie Farrell paid tribute to selector Shane O’Hanlon who passed away last weekend.

He admitted it was a ‘really, really tough week’ preparing for this one. ‘A special special man. A great presence around the place. A great character. We can’t believe he’s not with us.’

And he revealed that former manager Pat Gilroy – involved in the backroom team last year – could yet be on board for 2024.

‘I’d a chat with Pat earlier on. I’d be hoping Pat would be back with us at some point in time. He has huge work commitments, has a lot going on family wise. He said talk to him after the league and we’ll look at it then.’

As to staying up or challenging in Division 1?

‘I don’t think we’re going to get hung up on League status,’ said the Dublin manager. Some people thought it would be the end of the world to be relegated out of Division 2 and we won the championship out of Division 2. In some ways, it’s an easier place to give fellas time.’
