Brennan rescues Royals in Cavan

- By Micheal Clifford

A LATE Seán Brennan free earned Meath a share of their points with neighbours Cavan last night.

Brennan’s 69th minute conversion saw the Division 2 clash finish 0-11 apiece at Breffni Park, but while Cavan join Armagh and Donegal at the top of the table on seven points, they have now played a game more.

It looked as if the home side had done enough when Paddy Lynch, who finished with 0-6, put them in front two minutes from the end of normal time, as Ramond Galligan’s charges came from four points down at the break, when Meath led by 0-7 to 0-3.

For a local derby, it was a slow-burner and after 15

minutes, the sides were deadlocked at 0-1 apiece.

Quick-fire scores from Matthew Costello and Shane Walsk kick-started the Royals into life at the start of the second quarter, with six of their seven first-half scores coming from open play.

Meanwhile, the other Division 2 fixture between table-toppers Armagh and Fermanagh due to take place last night has been postponed until 2pm today.

However, the game will only get the green light if Brewster Park, which failed a pitch inspection yesterday, is deemed fit to play on.

Clare’s unexpected promotion bid from Division 3 gained further momentum with their 1-16 to 0-14 win over Limerick in Rathkeale.

The win moves Clare level with Down and Westmeath on eight points but they have played one game more than their promotion rivals.

Carlow’s bid to get out of the bottom tier looks doomed after a late goal from Wexford veteran Ben Brosnan saw them slump to a 1-14 to 0-7 home defeat.

Meanwhile, second-half goals from Evan Carroll and Kevin Swayne helped Laois to a 2-12 to 0-9 Division 4 win over London in Portlaoise.
