PUT YOUR HOME ON RED ALERT

There’s a new trend in interior design and it’s all about adding a pop of unexpected red to lift a room

- Emily Westbrooks

Have you heard about the theory of unexpected red? It’s a theory ricocheting around the interior design corners of the internet that adding a single piece of unexpected red can make all the difference in your home.

If, like me, red isn’t the colour you choose for your home, you might feel a bit sceptical about this trend. However, it’s hard to argue against any of these inspiration images. They’re undeniably vibrant — and the same rooms wouldn’t be if they didn’t have that single pop of cheery red.

Of course, not everyone is ready to invest in a poppy red sofa. If that feels like too big a leap, fear not. It appears that smaller, less permanent and expensive injections of red can have similar effects of brightening up a room. Bedding, vases, cushions; they’re all options that will allow you to try out the trend without breaking the bank.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re choosing the perfect red accessory or piece of furniture for a room.

First, the shade of red does matter. Be on the lookout for a true primary red, or a colour that leans ever-so-slightly in the direction of cherry. Red-orange can work, but only with the right complementary colours throughout the room.

Speaking of complementary colours, green shades will create the perfect backdrop for your unexpected pop of red. Other jewel tones can fit the bill as well, and neutrals like slightly creamy offwhite can create lovely serene backdrops, too.

If you’re sceptical, try picking up a few bunches of bright red tulips in the coming weeks and test the theory for yourself. You might just be surprised at how much vibrance a hit of red can deliver!
