Fair City star Cowan clashes with Hermann Kelly over MEP slur

- By Debbie McCann

THE leader of the Irish Freedom Party (IFP) became embroiled in a Twitter spat with Fair City star Rory Cowan this week after he called a female Fine Gael MEP a ‘butch lesbian’.

The war of words erupted after Mr Cowan criticised the UK news network GB News for having Hermann Kelly on the channel to discuss Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s resignation.

He wrote on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Who tf is Hermann Kelly when he’s at home? I live in Ireland, and have done for all my life, and I’ve never heard of him. Where did you find him?’

The IFP leader replied, saying he was running for an MEP seat in Midlands-North-West against Fine Gael’s Maria Walsh, a former Rose of Tralee winner who he outrageously claimed got the seat only because she is a ‘butch lesbian’.

Mr Kelly said: ‘I’m running for a MEP seat in Midlands-NorthWest against your beloved @FineGael. Hope to be taking a seat off useless do-nothing Maria Walsh who only got the job... well... let’s be honest, because she’s a butch lesbian. This was so trendy under Varadkar, now departed.’

Mr Cowan responded by calling Mr Kelly an ‘awful creep’.

After the far-right leader replied that it was ‘very charming’ of him, Mr Cowan added: ‘I was saying you sound like a creep based on your comment about @MariaWalshEU sexuality and appearance.

‘Being charming wasn’t my intention. If someone living in the midlands-north-west is gay, or has family members, friends, colleagues etc who are gay, and see how you belittled an opponent in the same election because she’s a member of the gay community, then in my opinion they should think very hard about supporting you.’

Mr Kelly went to further insult Ms Walsh, claiming that: ‘Being Rose of Tralee didn’t equip Maria Walsh with necessary skills/ knowledge to do MEP job, so I seek to replace her.’
