No more blue sky thinking

HOPES that sunnier skies – which brought a beautiful respite from the miserable weather of recent months – would stretch into this week have been dashed by Met Éireann.

In its latest forecast, the national meteorological service said there will be some sunny spells this morning, but also some ‘scattered showers to begin’. And conditions are set to take a turn for the worse when showers ‘turn heavy and thundery as they progress eastwards later’.

The forecaster added: ‘Slowmoving showers will lead to spot flooding across parts of the north and east with the chance of embedded thunderstorms. Very mild or rather warm with highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees with light winds.’

Tomorrow will be ‘generally cloudy with rain, heavy at times, slowly tracking northwards with a chance of some thundery bursts and spot flooding’ but conditions will be brighter and drier later in the afternoon.

Tuesday will start off cloudy, but will have ‘better sunny spells’ later in the day. Met Éireann said: ‘Outbreaks of rain will likely affect much of Munster and south Leinster with showers developing further north. ‘There is a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Highs of 14 to 19 degrees generally, warmest over the northern half of the country. Winds will be mostly light to moderate northeasterly but fresher northerlies far west and southwest.’ A mix of sunny spells and scattered showers is forecast Wednesday and Thursday, ‘with thunderstorms possible’, according to Met Éireann.

However, the outlook for next weekend is hopeful, as high pressure will return ‘bringing a transition to drier conditions… with increasing temperatures.’
