CASTLEGREGORY

Castlegregory 0-11 Beaufort 0-17 - Junior Championship 2015. Many would fancy Beaufort to do well in the Kerry Junior Championship with some fine young talent in all quarters of the pitch and they ultimately affirmed this suggestion, proving too hot for 2010 All-Ireland Junior Champions Castlegregory. Castlegregory, although s division below Beaufort, started this encounter with real purpose which reflected their current top of league status in Division 4. The home side scored s point from play in each of the first three minutes without reply from full forward Colm O’Mahony (0-1) and Anton Kelliher (0-2), both of whom were to be the key contributors to the West Kerry team’s score line over the 60 minutes. A goal opportunity beckoned for the third of those Castlegregory points which might have got the more fancied Beaufort second guessing themselves early on. However, they converted two 35 yards frees followed by a point from play to keep the team’s level after 15 minutes. The sides then shared scores to bring it to 6 points apiece but with two minutes left on the clock the mid Kerry club took two points from successive Castlegregory kick-outs which gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish again, with the half time ending 0-6 to 0-8. The second half, which gave Beaufort a slight wind advantage, started as the first half ended as the visitors took control again, with the impressive wing forward Francis Courtney leading the way with some fine long range scores from play and frees. Within ten minutes Beaufort had put another four scores on the board without reply leaving it 0-12 to 0-6 and the game escaping the home side. Castlegregory were losing the midfield battle and their here-to-fore working short kick out tactic was now failing them. Beaufort’s fantastic counter attacking ability and accurate kick passing meant the final five points that Castlegregory did muster were almost immediately counteracted by the visitors each time. And so the stronger and more astute Beaufort never looked like giving Castlegregory any real chance of getting back to within goaling distance that might have forced a draw.
