Killarney athletes qualify for World Powerlifting Championship
TWO local residents, Martin Maher ane Helen Twomey, have qualified for the World Powerlifting Championship, which will be held in London on 12th June.
Martin Maher, a regular used of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, has always based his fitness workout on strength and has now turned his focus on powerlifting competitions.
The sport is based around three disciplines: squats, bench presses and deadlifting. Competitors have three attempts at lifting a maximum weight on each category and the total score is based on a combination of weights lifted across all three.
With new developments in fitness-based goals, the benefits of strength training has never been more evident and in demand. Strength training is becoming increasing popular among Killarney Leisure Centre’s female members due to the short term and long term benefits.
Local woman and Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre member, Helen Twomey is a prime example that powerlifting and strength training isn’t just for the men.
Helen recently competed in her first powerlifting competition in CIT, and broke a world record on the deadlift. What she has achieved in such a short time is incredible and her hard work and loyalty is paying off.
Anybody interested in strength training, from beginners to advanced, who would like professional advice, can contact one of the fully qualified gym instructors on 064 66 36554.
All the staff at The Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre would like to wish Martin and Helen the best of luck in the July championship.
