Impressive Firies take the spoils in Dromid

-

Dromid Pearses 0-11 Firies 1-14 A BIG early casualty at the first hurdle as last year’s runners-up Dromid Pearses were knocked by Firies on home turf last Sunday.

A period of 1-6 without reply in the opening 12 minutes of the second-half was key to the East Kerry side’s success after the hosts had led narrowly by 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time.

Although Dromid scored the first two points of proceedings, Kerry panellist Jack Sherwood got Firies on the board in the seventh minute before Colm O’Shea got the first of an impressive personal total on the day.

Tomás Curran and Chris Farley were the main score getters for the hosts in the first period with Sean Ó Sé unlucky not to get a goal after an effort landed on top of instead of underneath the net. O’Shea nearly had a goal at the other end for Firies but the visitors still trailed by a point at the break.

The visitors’ goal in that period of seven successive scores came from Padraig O’Mahony in the 36th minute. Despite the best efforts of Farley and Curran, Firies would lead by 1-12 to 0-9 coming towards the conclusion with points from substitute Paul Lynch and Mike Daly cancelling out respective closing points from the aforementioned Dromid players in a six point win for the visitors.

O’Shea finished with a total of seven points on the day and while it’s another away trip for Firies in the quarter-finals, it’s a much, much shorter trip than South Kerry for them as they will face off against neighbouring Listry in an eagerly awaited encounter.
