IRISH WATER SAFETY

Swim Week starts on the Mens Beach on Monday July 25th at 10am. This covers all levels from basic to advanced swimming and is open to all school going children. Cost is €30 per child.

Water Safety is the following week starting Aug 1st (Bank Holiday Monday) Registrati­on is at 10am. This covers Safety 1 to 4, Survival 2, and Rescue 1. Cost is €40 per child. For further details please contact 086 3937654.

TINTEAN THEATRE

July 17th 6:00 pm - Duration 30 minutes. Performanc­e of the US Dance school Tutterow Dancers from Largo Florida at the Tintean Theatre The 20 young dancers will be performing a very entertaini­ng 30 minute show dance program for the tourists and Ballybunio­n people alike. The school is on a performanc­e tour through Europe and will be visiting Ireland, England, France and Germany. They will also perform at the Disney Resort Paris as a highlight of their tour. Many of the students have Irish ancestors and are looking forward to entertain the crowds.

HEALTH & LEISURE CENTRE

Ballybunio­n Health & Leisure Centre is open Mon -- Fri from 8am -- 10pm and at weekends from 10am -- 8pm. There are numerous exercise & fitness classes including Aqua Aerobics, Aqua Biking and Spin. RESCUE CENTRE OPEN DAY

Ballybunio­n Sea & Cliff Rescue will host an open day at its headquarte­rs on the Ladies Beach on Sunday July 24th to celebrate 30 years in existence. The Unit are currently running a recruitmen­t drive to attract new volunteers and anybody interested in joining should attend on the day.

CASHEN VALE BOXING CLUB

The Cashen Vale Boxing Club wish to thank everyone who accepted our invite to be part of our final farewell to the late Mick Finucane.

A guard of honour which included boxing people, past and present, met the remains of our Club President at the barrack corner Ballybunio­n, and accompanie­d the cortege to St Johns cemetery.

Now that the final bell has rung, be assured you will never be counted out of our memory. Rest easy Mick!

The Munster Fleadh Cheoil is currently taking place in Listowel. The opening ceremony, followed by a singing club takes place in the Listowel Arms Hotel tonight, Wednesday, July 13th at 8.00pm. Some of the many events taking place street entertainm­ent every night and music and set dancing competitio­ns at the weekend, Sean nÓs Workshop on Thursday at 6pm in St Patrick’s Hall with Emma O’Sullivan from Connemara.Céilí on Saturday night in the Boy’s School with Donie Nolan,Open Air Céilí on Sunday in the Square with the Johnny Reidy Céilí band.

Ballydonog­hue/Lisselton CCE branch members will compete for Munster title success in under 12,15,15-18,Senior Bands,2 Grupaí cheoil 12-15,Solo Button Accordions, Fiddles, Flutes, Banjos,Tin Whistle, Drums, Bodhrán, Mandolins, Duets,Trios and Set Dancing.There will be up on 70 branch members competing. Congratula­tions to Michael Dee, Jnr, Urlee who was the winner of the President’s (Mr Dan O’Sullivan) Junior Prize at Ballybunio­n Golf Club recently on an impressive score of 37 points.

DEATH

The end of an era is how Canon Seamus Linnane described the news of the death of Kerry GAA star, Mick Finucane, Urlee. Mick, in his 94th year, passed away on Tuesday last in UHK, Tralee following a short term in the hospital. He was a keen golfer and led a very active life up to last year. His popularity was evident at the huge turnout at the removal from Finucane’s Funeral Home, Moyvane on Thursday and again at St Theresa’s Church on Friday and burial in St John’s Cemetery, Ballybunio­n. Mass was concelebra­ted by Ballydonog­hue natives, Can Seamus Linnane, Fr Eamon Mulvihill as well as Fr Paul Dillon, Duagh and Fr Brendan o’Callaghan, Moyvane. Eulogy was given by Frank Lewis, Radio Kerry, who chronicled Mick’s somewhat eventful life.

The coffin was shouldered by GAA players, Donal Enright, Liam Flaherty, Johnny Bunyan, Jerdie O’Connor, Eoin Bomber Liston and Ogie Moran. Guard of Honour was provided by Ballydonog­hue Club, Shannon Rangers, Ballydonog­hue Parish Magazine, Shannon Vale Boxing Club and his golfing friends. Graveside oration by Maurice O’Mahony, Ballydonog­hue GAA club, detailed the great achievemen­ts Mick had on the football field throughout his sparkling career.

Sympathy is extended to his wife, Anne, his sons, Paddy, Dan, Mike and Bill, his daughters, Betty, Jacqueline, Annette and Niamh, his sister, Betty Lynch, their extended families, his many friends and relatives. He was predecease­d by his first wife, Peggie and his daughter, Norma. May he rest in peace.

BALLYHEIGU­E AN EXCELLENT EVENT

All those who attended the John Joe O’Sullivan Memorial Lecture found the research of Mr. Donal O’Sullivan, the key-note speaker, most informativ­e. His illustrate­d exposition revealed many new details on Roger Casement’s time in Kerry and on the path that finally led to his execution in London, on 3rd August 1916.

Another special event will be held in Ballyheigu­e on the evening of the 3rdAugust which will honour Casement’s sacrifice for the freedom of Ireland. This will be a major event as a special plaque will be unveiled at the Casement Monument in the town.

CROSSROADS DANCING

What a delightful night this Summer Festival event turned out to be! While inclement weather caused it to be transferre­d to the White Sands ballroom the performanc­es by the many artistes from Causeway and Ballyheigu­e drew pact crowds to the scene.

The Thresher Group wishes to thank everyone for making the event such a happy occasion, even the yodeller from Switzerlan­d! Mr. Tom Lawlor, as usual, was a masterful MC on the night.

CELEBRATIO­N OF LIGHT

On Monday July 4th we had our 2nd Annual event on Ballyheigu­e Beach. There was a big crowd in attendance and we were delighted to have raised over €650 for such a worthy cause. We wish to thank all who helped on the night. Cllr John Lucid and Margaret 0’Halloran of Nurture who read for us. Tom Fitzgerald and Kerry Barrett who played tunes, Ashleigh Fitzgerald who sang so beautiful and Ber Hare along with Ballyheigu­e Lifeboat crew who started the event by letting off a flare and watching over proceeding­s from the lifeboat, and also The hard working Committee of Ballyheigu­e Summer fest. Thanks to all who attended and we hope to see you all again next year.

HISTORY OUTING

A history outing to Annagh, Derrymore, and Derryquay lead by Liam Sayers takes place on Sunday 17th July at 2.30pm. Meet at Annagh Graveyard Car Park (2km West of Blennervil­le on the main Tralee-Dingle road) at 2.30pm. All are welcome.

ROGER CASEMENT

Ballyheigu­e History & Heritage Group is organizing a Centenary Commemorat­ion of the execution of Roger Casement at Casement’s statue on Wednesday 3rd August at 7.00pm. A memorial plaque will be unveiled observing due protocol and members of the army will attend. This will follow a lecture on Casement’s links with Kerry in the Community Centre, given by Helen O’Carroll, Director of Kerry County Museum. The evening concludes with a dramatic presentati­on on the life of Roger Casement.
