LISTOWEL ROCKS TO REVIVAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
HUNDREDS FLOCK TO LISTOWEL FOR FIRST REVIVAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
THE sound of music filled the town from early last Saturday as the groups took to the stage for a quick sound test ahead of the much anticipated Revival festival. Listening from afar, it was clear that those attending the event were in for a treat.
The strength of the line-up and the mammoth effort by the organising committee to publicise the festival months in advance were clear signals of intent. The organisers were tactical in their selection of groups - the music appealed to adults of all ages. The Stunning were simply that, while the Frank & Walters and the Riptide Movement induced similar levels of euphoria and excitement.
Following on from the success of last month’s Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan, the Revival was the perfect precursor for Listowel race week which will be in full swing this time next month.
It was wonderful to see the masses move up town in the concerts aftermath. As I was making my way up William Street I heard someone shout, “Ger, come on in”, I looked around and saw Liam Canty standing at the door of the Shebeen pub.
Sure I couldn’t say no to the man – he’s a good business man and had myself and four mates inside the door in 10 seconds flat. The pubs were overflowing all night and that level of business was exactly what the publicans deserved after all the effort they had put into the event.
Revival should happen more often, it generated plenty of good vibes in the town, further enhanced Listowel’s reputation as a festival town and remarkably – the pot holes on William Street were even patched up some bit. Those pot holes have been there for so long and are of such an infamous nature, they’ve almost become a tourist attraction.
According to committee member, Aiden O’Connor, organisers were ‘over the moon’ with the success of the event and although official attendance figures have not yet been released, it is estimated that between 1,700 and 2,000 people passed through the entrance gates – very one of them adding to the atmosphere in their own way.
On behalf of the organising committee Aiden expressed his gratitude to the local residents, Heineken, Kerry County Council and all those who sponsored the event.
Given the success of last Saturday night and the dogged determination possessed by the organisers, the Revival festival is very likely to become a premier event on the Kerry summer calendar.
