5km charity walk in Laura’s memory

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

A 5KM walk in memory of a young teenage girl who passed away from cancer back in August, will be held in Tralee this coming Sunday, November 20, with all proceeds from the day going towards the Ronald McDonald Charity.

Laura Shanahan was just 17-years-old when she passed away from Ewings Saracoma, a rare form of cancer that is most commonly found in teenagers and adolescents.

“Laura was a very strong character; she was always positive, she never let her treatment get her down, she was an inspiration to so many people around her,” said Lorraine Walsh, one of the organisers of the walk, talking to The Kerryman

“She was just like every teenage girl really, she loved to meet her friends and she would just spend hours watching make-up tutorials.

“The Ronald McDonald charity was located next to the hospital where she was being treated and she said it was like a home away from home.

“She’d be delighted that her family and friends are giving something back to a charity that was very near to her heart”.

The walk will leave from the Brandon Hotel at 1.30pm on Sunday and will take in Lohercannon, O’ Rahilly’s Villas and the canal on the route.

Donations to the charity will be welcomed on the day with as many as possible encouraged to attend.
