The Kerryman (North Kerry)

Free-flowing nostalgia at Knockanure

- By GER MULVIHILL

1966 is remembered by many as the year of England’s only World Cup triumph; others associate it with the arrival of the Star Trek series but for at least one North Kerry community it is best remembered as the year that Scoil Chorp Chriost opened its doors in Knockanure.

Those events are not written in order of importance of course; particularly if you have any connection with the North Kerry area.

It was the latter event that brought cause for celebration on Friday night as many students and teachers who have paved the school’s corridors over the years gathered to mark its golden jubilee.

Nostalgia flowed from the outset as all gazed upon the old roll books and photos on display. Murmurs of “by God” were aplenty as memories of times past came flooding back.

Mass was also celebrated on the evening in the company of Bishop Ray Browne, Kevin McNamara, Parish Priest and former PP Fr John Lucid in the Corpus Christi Church, Knockanure. For a period beginning in 1874, the present day Knockanure Community Centre was the location of its school, and it was there that refreshments were enjoyed after Mass as the crowd shared anecdotes of time spent in a school that remains at the heart of the community. Present-day Principal Julienne Donegan who shared a timeline of the school’s history with those present, described the momentous occasion as ‘a historical and memorable night in the journey of our school.’
