Unbeaten Cougars in overtime loss to KCYMS

A GREAT game in the Killorglin Sports Complex saw unbeaten Cougars go down in overtime to Killorglin as they picked up their first win of the season. There was little between the sides throughout the game with KCYMS ahead 1513 at the end of the first quarter and 32-28 at half time with Paul Sheehan in top form with 13 points with Cougars Pa Murphy and Eugene Bowler on target with 6 points each.

The third quarter saw Cougars tie the game with their best spell with Tomas Armonas dominant on the boards and Alan Flynn with a couple of three pointers tied the game 50-50. Both teams were free scoring in a great last quarter but the sides couldn’t be separated with Maurice Sheehan and Brian Eccles on target for KCYMS and Cougars three point shooting of Dan Cronin and Alan Flynn saw the game tied 72-72.

Overtime saw KCYMS force the pace with more coming from the bench they edged ahead and Cougars couldn’t find a response as the home side held on to win in a cracking game the win which gets KCYMS back in with a chance of a playoff spot.

LADIES DIVISION 2

ST. Mary’s got off to a bright start, scoring 8 unanswered points. St. Anne’s responded through two Joanne O’Mahony three-pointers, to help keep the home side in touch. Both teams traded baskets to bring the scoreline to 13-12 in favour of St. Mary’s.

In the second quarter St. Mary’s energetic defence restricted St. Anne’s to forced shots, while on offence Moira Hughes extended St. Mary’s lead to 21-16 at half time.

The third quarter saw great team work between DD O’Sullivan and Orla O’Sullivan drawing fouls from the St. Mary’s side and scoring their free throws to keep St. Anne’s in the game. St. Mary’s had impressive outside shooting from Louise Joyce scoring two three-pointers while Jackie Burke dominated under the boards, scoring 19 points in the third and fourth quarter.

St. Anne’s showed great determinat­ion and never gave up with DD O’Sullivan scoring 10 points in the final quarter but it was not enough.

ACADEMY BOYS POOL 1

KCYMS hosted Killarney Cougars in an academy pool 1 game and the home side were the stronger team from the very start. Dara Lawson, Cian Kissane and Kuba Ciesia were performing well for KCYMS, while J Coffey and D Butler were standing out for the visitors. The score at the end of Q1 was 8-3 in favour of KCYMS.

KCYMS continued to pull away in the second quarter, with Eoin O’Connell, Matt Spillane and David O’Brien leading the charge, while T O’Gorman and TS O’Donovan were also starting to excel for Cougars as KCYMS led Cougars 24-9 at half-time.

The second half saw Cougars do their best to reduce the deficit but KCYMS were just a little too strong for them. Jack Driscoll and M Daly were giving everything they could for Cougars, while Dara Hogan and Niall O’Brien were controllin­g the floor for KCYMS. David O’Brien gave his best display of the year for KCYMS and led the team home in the final quarter.

ACADEMY BOYS POOL 1

KCYMS hosted St Brendan’s in an Academy Pool 1 game and it was a ding dong battle from the throw in. The first quarter was very even with Denis McGeever, Nathan Key and Ross Bowell performing well for KCYMS, while Liam Og O’Connor and Sean Barrett were excellent for the visitors. The score at the end of the first quarter was 6-4 in favour of KCYMS. KCYMS introduced Eoin O’Connell for the second quarter and he made an instant impression, scoring 6 points, with Conor Buckley providing the assists. Rory Hannifin and Paddy Lane were also starting to show for St Brendan’s as the sides were tied on 13 apiece at half time.

KCYMS took control of the match in the third quarter and it was here that the game was won, with Darragh Foley controllin­g the defence, while Dara Hogan and Niall Tadhg O’Brien were doing the scoring. Daniel Kirby and Conor Lucey were trying hard for St Brendan’s but their scoring dried up as KCYMS led 20-13 at the end of the third.

A frantic last quarter saw St Brendan’s throw everything at KCYMS, and a combinatio­n of some excellent steals by St Brendan’s and some poor turnovers by KCYMS saw the deficit reduce to 5, but time ran out for St Brendan’s, and KCYMS hung on for the win.

U14 BOYS DIVISION 3

GNEEVEGUIL­LA just about did enough to beat St Brendan’s Tralee after a tight contest which could have gone either way. St Brendan’s led by a point on a score line of 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Gneeveguil­la recovered well and were up three at half time.

At the end of the third quarter Gneeveguil­la had just a point to spare. In the last quarter Gneeveguil­la went up 7 but St. Brendans never gave up and kept closing the gap. However time ran out and Gneeveguil­la held on to win with 2 points to spare.

Sean Hurley, Dylan Riordan and Ryan Daly were very strong in attack while Sean Finnegan and Cian O’Leary were very solid in defence. Cathal Concagh, Nelly Olanhewash and Adam O’Keeffe were very effective for St. Brendans.
