THE Charles O’Shea Memorial 10k Road Race is an essential part of any New Year’s Day in Beaufort, and the 29th running of the event proved typically popular with athletics people from near and far.
SEÁN Murphy of Star of the Laune Athletic Club was among the organisers and participants, and he explained to The Kerryman how the event has bloomed particularly in recent years.
“ABOUT two years ago the start time was moved back a couple of hours and we introduced a 5k run alongside the main event, and that’s gotten more family involvement going,” he said.
“WE had 96 in the 10k this year and 95 in the 5k, while we also had about 50 or 60 walkers. People are always out on the sides of the roads as well to give us water and jellies on our way along the loop, so it’s a well supported event.”
MIKE Mangan of Star of the Laune was equally thrilled with the event’s success, and congratulated all the various winners on the day.
“MIKE Carmody of Limerick was the winner of the men’s event in a time of 32 minutes and 2 seconds, narrowly edging out Tim O’Connor of An Ríocht AC,” he said.
“THE women’s event was taken by Limerick’s Rosemary Ryan ahead of Cork’s Anna O’Neill. Cian Clifford of Killorglin and Mary O’Connor of An Ríocht were the winners in the 5k, and many others took prizes the age categories.”
