Intermediate School’s RDS success adds to Killorglin’s wonderful week

-

AS if Killorglin Community College’s success wasn’t enough for the mid Kerry town, there was further excitement over at The Intermediate School, as Transition Year students Cadhla Piggott (15) and Orlaith Reynolds (16) notched up a double triumph for their investigation into the effect of the lunar cycle on students.

The project got underway properly in September and the girls have grafted away tirelessly under the guidance of teacher Sheree Murphy ever since. Their impressive work was based on data accumulated over the last two years, which found that the transition phase just prior to the full moon sees more students on detention than any other phase in the lunar cycle.

The duo’s efforts were highly commended by the judges as they finished in the top five in the senior category of the social and behavioural sciences section. With that, they also scooped a special prize for the quality of their presentation.

Their teacher Sheree described the excitement to The

Kerryman as the judges acknowledged the girls so plentifully for their terrific work:

“It was an amazing week from Wednesday through to Saturday,” she said.

“The likes of Micheál Martin, Evelyn Cusack and Dr Niall Moyna visited their stall so there was no shortage of excitement even before they’d picked up their prizes.”

Sheree said the girls were shocked when their names were announced amongst the winners, but their surprise quickly turned to joy.

“They were extremely shocked on Friday evening when it was announched they had won not once but twice,” she said.

“They both called it ‘ the best experience’ they’ve had during their school years so far, so I think that’s a fairly good sign of the week they had,” the thrilled science teacher added.
