Tarbert brings young Scientist honours to North Kerry
TARBERT Comprehensive School got in on Killorglin’s success with a double victory of its own on Friday evening.
The North Kerry school sent five transition year students and two projects to Dublin’s RDS last week, and returned with two prizes.
Tomás Culhane and Ciaran Healey scooped two awards in the intermediate technology category for their project ‘Bristles, less power lost by thistles’, consising of an electric fence demonstration that doesn’t lose current when coming in to contact with vegetation.
Their efforts won a high commendation from the judges, as well a presentation award.
Another project on Equestrian Road Safety by Aoife O’Brien, Áine Enright and Chloe O’Carroll received strong praise throughout the week.
Ger Nash, a physics teacher at Tarbert Comprehensive, was in Dublin with the students last week and praised his students generously:
“They had everying set up by midday on Wednesday last, and after that hard work was out of the way, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves, over the course of the four days” he said.
“It was great to leave with a couple of prizes because both teams have worked ferociously since September, regularly staying in after school to put the final touches on their projects.”
“It was a fine achievement to claim awards, but the girls received a lot of praise also over the course of the week also, and of course to even qualify is no small achievement. We’re very proud of our five students.” Ger added.
